Former German international midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes hopes of his nation collecting a fourth World Cup have been damaged by the injury that has ruled out Marco Reus.

Hamann, our Sony expert following Germany during the World Cup Finals in Brazil, says the loss of the Dortmund midfielder only compounds the apathy surrounding Joachim Löw’s squad.

“Reus to miss the World Cup … it’ll be a hammer blow to Germany’s chances to go far in that tournament. He is irreplaceable,” said Hamann.

“There is little euphoria in Germany surrounding the national team at the moment because of all the players missing and out of form,” says the former Bayern, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester City star.

“The expectations are not incredibly high – although this is not necessarily a bad thing.

“But they have no striker, (Bastian) Schweinsteiger is a very important player who missed many games this year due to injury, you cannot says if (Sami) Khedira is 100 per cent fit, (Ilkay) Gundogan could have been a big player, but he did not even make the team. And now Reus is a hammer blow,” concedes Didi.

He added; “Upfront Löw has little to select from. While Germany is still looking for the best solution in attack, other big teams already have their star strikers in position.

“It is not bad when the expectations are low, because it’s easier to surprise in a positive way. But on the other side, there are too many roadworks in that team and I don’t think Germany is a serious contender for the title.”

And, searching for any kind of positives ahead of the big kick-off, Didi says Germany still have one world class performer to select – if fit.

“In goal Manuel Neuer is the best,” concedes Hamann. “We have to wait and see how fit he is. But if he has his form, he is the number one.”
