Argentina and Messi to shine in Brazil tips Hamann

Former German international Dietmar Hamann, our Sony expert following Germany during the World Cup Finals in Brazil, today gives his predictions on who will star, who will score and who should have stayed at home ahead of the big kick-off this week.

And according to Didi, it’s all too easy to sound predictable …

Who will be the big winners in Brazil? …
“As usual ahead of these tournaments there is lots of guessing going on at the moment. I have a few favourites, Spain being amongst them. But I have to start – and finish – with Argentina. Lionel Messi was injured in recent months so he will be more fresh this summer than before. Plus, he really has improved in the national team.

“Their attacking force with Messi, di Maria and Aguero is probably better than what anyone else has.

So the bottom line is in the end I am very boring: Argentina will be World Champions and Lionel Messi will be the player of the tournament.”

Who would be your ‘dark horse’? …
Chile has a very good chance. They are a good team. But I rate France highly because of the way they qualified. The loss of Franck Ribery is a big blow, but they have a strong mentality. They lost the first leg play-off 2-0 in Ukraine and everybody thought they were out. But then they won in Paris by 3-0. They have confidence and probably have a mentality like they have nothing to lose at the back of their heads.

“They have a coach in Didier Deschamps who is focussed on discipline. In my eyes that was their biggest problem in recent years. They had many talented players but they destroyed themselves. Omitting Nasri from the squad was an important sign. Deschamps made it clear that he did not want to take the best players to Brazil, but the best team.

Who may fail? …
“Some have mentioned them as their dark horse for the tournament but for me it is not Belgium. Of course they have outstanding players, but they have no experience on this level. They will play a reasonable tournament, but I consider them overhyped.”

I’d like to see? …
“In general I hope we will see better football in Brazil than we did four years ago in South Africa. Back then I think the altitude did not help, and the way the ball reacted made it difficult for everyone. So that is a very simple wish for me ahead of the tournament.”

Who will be the best ‘keeper at this tournament? …
“That’s easy. Manuel Neuer is the best. We will need to see how fit he is. But if he is in form, he is the number one. I also expect a great tournament by France’s Hugo Lloris. He had strong performances at Tottenham this season.”

And, finally, the top scorer? …
“I expect the Golden Shoe winner to come from a team that reaches the semi-finals. And it helps if he is also allowed to take the penalties. So for me the strongest candidates for the top scorer are Messi and Karim Benzema.”
