Diego Godin, Uruguay’s captain and goalscorer against Italy in their Group D decider in Natal, will continue to be the key man if they are to go far in this World Cup. That’s the opinion of Diego Simeone, his club manager at Atletico Madrid.
Not long after scoring the goal that won La Liga for Atletico at Barcelona’s Nou Camp, the centre-half was back with another invaluable header to send Uruguay through to the last 16 in Brazil.
Simeone, the Sony Coaching Ambassador for the World Cup, said of the 28-year-old, capped 79 times: “He is one of the most important players in the club. If you asked me who couldn´t leave Atletico I would say Godín.
“Godín has improved a lot in every aspect a man can improve: footballwise, in terms of people management and timing wise. I wish him the best. I love him and I hope he plays with us in the future.”
