Hi everyone. I’ll be here at 1500 CET (1400 BST) to answer your World Cup questions. Submit them early here, or ask me on social media using the hashtag #AskMendieta

bryan magezi@bryanmagezi#AskMendieta Who would you prefer to replace Neymar and Silva at the back.
Gaizka Mendieta: I think the best option for Neymar would be Willian but it will depend on Scolari. For Silva, Dante is the natural replacement. I have been surprised Willian hasn’t played more
July 8 2014 2:10PM
#AskMendieta Do you think Scolari should’ve taken better attacking options (Coutinho and Moura for example) in his squad?
Gaizka Mendieta: When a coach trusts a team, it’s difficult to change it. With the players they have we’d like to see another game style but Scolari choose effectivity from maybe some magic
July 8 2014 2:16 PM
@scota-12 What’s the main German threat?
Gaizka Mendieta: The whole team have been consistent, the keeper is very good, and Muller of course is a threat. But it’s hard to find one player, it’s a team effort and when they all work well it’s hard to stop them.
July 8 2014 2:19PM
Comitweets@Comitweets WHICH GOALKEEPER: IKER CASILLAS OR GIANLUCA BUFFON? #AskMendieta
Gaizka Mendieta: I’d go for Casillas! Not only personal reasons but he’s been at the top for a long time.
July 8 2014 2:21 PM
Stanley @stanleyhycienth #AskMendieta Do you think Germany lack a goal poacher like Mario Gomez in this WC?
Gaizka Mendieta: Not really, they don;t really play that way.
July 8 2014 2:26 PM
Fahad nazar @Fahadnzr Would you like to place özil on bench? And with which player you will replace him? #AskMendieta
Gaizka Mendieta: He’s not performed as well as expected but I don’t see him being on the bench.
July 8 2014 2:30 PM
#AskMendieta What happened to Spain in this World Cup? #AskMendieta
Gaizka Mendieta: A combination of things, changing the system, bringing in Costa which changed the system. Alse they’ve played too many games. They lacked the sparkle. It wasn’t as bad as it looked, especially against Netherlands
July 8 2014 2:34 PM
@leebsie How do you see these semi-finals going?
Gaizka Mendieta: It’s tough for Brazil because they will lack some balance, but they have the strength of character and are competitive. They have energy and motivation. I’d like to see European teams in the final. Why not?
As a football fan, Brazil v Argentina would be amazing as well! In the other game, Di Maria is a big loss. He’s had a lot to do with them winning. He’s unbelievable, he changes games. Obviously Messi is incredible but the energy and pace Di Maria has releases so much pressure for the team
July 8 2014 2:37 PM
#AskMendieta Would you prefer Gago or Maxi Rodriguez to replace Di Maria, which of #ARG & #NED do you back to reach final? #AskMendieta
Gaizka Mendieta: He’ll play with Mascherano and Baglia, I don’t think he’ll go with Gago. Maybe Maxi. I don’t think it will effect Messi too much. He attracts so many players to himself to give space to other players
Netherlands will have to focus on Messi, so without Di Maria it will be harder for Messi. Van Gaal I expect will defend with three, he’ll have a lot of bodies in midfield as that’s where they will need superiority. I can see Holland playing five in midfield
Van Persie is the one who makes the difference in that team but I’m sure Man U fans will be happy to see Van Gaal there! He’s a great tactician and understands that side of the game so well. He deserves credit for that
July 8 2014 2:44 PM
@bago_12 Van Gaal is an authoritative manager. Is that good?
Gaizka Mendieta: If he has to drop someone he will. Look at Netherlands, he’s got a new team of young players but he’s kept two or three senior ones. He doesn’t mind if he has to drop Van Persie or whoever. He has a clear view and he doesn’t care about the big names are. I played under Van Gaal at Barca. He was great in terms of explaining things. He had a way he wanted to play, which kind of worked. But it was difficult with the players we had. He involves the players in his decisions, his office door was always open. That’s good, he listens. But he’s the boss, he makes that clear. He got Pep Guardiola into the tactical side of things. But the way he is he’s going to have enemies too. In general terms most players will say good things about him
July 8 2014 2:52 PM
@Scoza_12 Should Scolari go if Brazil lose?
Gaizka Mendieta: I don’t know if he’ll go but he’ll be criticised because of the way they’ve been playing. People expected more in terms of the players they have. But if they win they’ll be happy. If they lose people will criticise and he could go then.
July 8 2014 2:55 PM
#AskMendieta How does it feel to have once been one of the most expensive footballers in the world? #AskMendieta
Gaizka Mendieta: It didn’t bother me. It crossed my mind that someone could pay that kind of money for me, it’s an awful lot, but it’s football and you are used to that. It didn’t change anything in terms of pressure though, you do your best anyway. Most players don’t feel that pressure – you have pressure every day anyway
When you get on the pitch all that matters is the football. James Rodriguez could be the big transfer of this World Cup. He’s dealt with the pressure so far and he can be a name linked to a big transfer, there’ll be a lot of money spent on him!
July 8 2014 3:01 PM
#askmendieta Who will win the WC ? And what do you think about Sneijder’s performance ? Thank you idol!
Gaizka Mendieta: He’s been very good in this tournament, consistent, focused. I’ve been impressed with him.
July 8 2014 3:03 PM
@atletiok Will Atletico still be a threat next season?
Gaizka Mendieta: I think so yes, Barca have changed their manager but Real have stayed much the same but Atletico will be there or thereabouts. I played with Simeone at Lazio and I could tell he was going to be a manager. He had what it takes, you could tell
July 8 2014 3:08 PM
Gaizka Mendieta: Thanks for joining me today. That’s all for now. I hope we answered all your questions. Enjoy the rest of the World Cup!
