Messi to Lahm: What the World Cup experts say

Tags: Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Sony Handycam ®, Sony Xperia

The Goal 50 brings us some of the best players in the world, many of whom had a big say in the 2014 World Cup. Here, our World cup experts and Sony Team Ambassadors give their views on today’s greats …

Lionel Messi, No3, by Diego Milito

“I think that Leo has been showing to the world he’s a positive leader. There are several kinds of leaders who play the game. There are those who shout, those who show their example. Messi is the kind of player that everyone wants to have in their team. People ask me what he’s like on and off the pitch. Very quiet! He is a really great kid, a very good mate. And playing with him is really amazing. It is a pleasure to see him in each training session doing what he does. We are talking about one of the best players in the history of football.”

Neymar (30) by Gaizka Mendieta

“I don’t think Barcelona played to Neymar’s strengths last season and that’s because they’ve got Messi. When a team has a focal point, like Neymar for Brazil and Messi for Barcelona and Argentina, other players suffer because they receive fewer balls. But don’t forget, this was Neymar’s first season at the Nou Camp and he will only get stronger as he forges partnerships with those around him.”

Manuel Neuer (22) by Brad Friedel

“Manuel Neuer was my goalkeeper of the tournament, without a doubt. I always look at consistency in goalkeepers. If you look at all of the attributes, from shot-stopping to crosses to reading of the game and distribution, I think he’s the best in the world right now.”

Diego Godin (24) by Diego Simeone

“He is one of the most important players in the club. If you asked me who couldn´t leave Atletico I would say Godin. He has improved a lot in every aspect a man can improve: footballwise, in terms of people management and timing wise. I wish him the best. I love him and I hope he plays with us (Atletico) in the future.”

Arjen Robben (2) by Diego Milito

“Arjen Robben is an impressive player, a devastating one. His pace is incredible. Netherlands were difficult opponents. They’re a team who spent the last four years doing a great job.”

Luis Suarez (7) by Emile Heskey

“I think with Suarez having played in England, we know a bit more about him but stopping him is a different thing. He’s shown it this season with the goals he’s scored, it’s very difficult against him – he’s just sneaky. He’s got the ability to have two or three players around him and still come out with the ball. And as we’ve seen with his finishing ability, he has a vision in his mind and he just goes with it and it usually comes off. He’s very dangerous.”

Thomas Muller (5) by Alessandro Nesta

“To play against, maybe Muller would be the toughest, because he’ not the typical forward, his moves are out of the ordinary, he’s very difficult to be predicted. He would have been a worthy Golden Boot winner. An excellent player.”

Philipp Lahm (4) by Dietmar Hamann

“This position in midfield is all about vision – when you see things and how you see things. He does not have this experience and why should he after less than a year? Lahm has to play at right-back, because we have better players in midfield. There is simply no point in letting one of the best right-backs play in midfield.”

On Wednesday: James, Mascherano, Di Maria, Kroos … and the No1 man!
