Mendieta: Barca must be careful over Alves

It’s one thing Barcelona being linked with a controversial bid for Luis Suarez, but the future of Dani Alves could also be pivotal for the dethroned La Liga champions. That’s the opinion of former Barca star Gaizka Mendieta, a Sony Team Ambassador for the World Cup.

Alves, who won his 79th cap for Brazil in their penalty-shootout win over Chile (pictured), will be out of contract in June next year, which is why Barcelona are thought to be considering offloading the attack-minded full-back this summer. The World Cup in his home country is the perfect shop window, but selling the player could be a risk for new Barca boss Luis Enrique, according to Mendieta.

“Barcelona have some thinking to do about the future of Dani Alves,” said Mendieta. “It is a difficult decision – selling a player like him can be dangerous if you do not have a good replacement. His performances have not been as expected this year but he is one of the best players at his position, as an offensive back.

“If the player is ready to leave, it’s important to have someone to replace him. If Alves does stay and Barcelona sign Cuadrado, he will have rivalry but competition is always a good thing in a team.”

Alves’ wages could prove a stumbling block to any potential move – the 31-year-old is reported to take home €9million a year. He also said recently he would like to see Fiorentina’s Colombia international Cuadrado at the Nou Camp to provide competition for the left-back position.
