Germany head coach Joachim Löw took his decision and announced his preliminary squad for the World Cup in Brazil. And he did not pull only one David Odonkor 2.0, he has several of them!
It starts in the goal, where Marc-Andre ter Stegen gets to play the friendly against Poland next week, but is not allowed to travel to South America. Ron-Robert Zieler will take his spot. Surprise number one, check!
The second one comes right in front of the keeper on the left side: Erik Durm has not been capped yet and played only a couple of Bundesliga matches. And now he could very soon become World Cup winner 2014. His chance is very much there, in Dortmund he was a great replacement for the injured Marcel Schmelzer, now he could even take his colleague’s place in the national team. I think Durm has a better chance than for example Sampdoria Genua’s Shkrodan Mustafi. He was already called up against Chile but did not play.
The biggest surprise picks in midfield are without a doubt Leon Goretzka and Max Meyer. Both youngsters enjoyed a superb season at Schalke. The former Bochum man struggled at first at his new club but made his mark eventually. Meyer is THE revelation of the season. His performance in the second leg against Real Madrid was awesome and despite being only 18, he already has experience on international level. His agent Torsten Weck just praised him on Goal: “His development is so positive. You have to bow on how he coped with this difficult season at only 18 years of age.”
In attack Kevin Volland will make the final team. Joachim Löw should take two strikers to the tournament and since he decided against Mario Gomez, Volland should already have his ticket.
The coach has learned from former tournaments and not called any injured players. Miroslav Klose is on his way back to his best shape and Löw always held a spot for Sami Khedira. We should keep our fingers crossed for Real Madrid in Lisbon! The former Stuttgart man would arrive even stronger with a Champions League title in his suitcase.
