He wore the Spanish national team shirt with distinction on 40 occasions between 1999 and 2002, scoring eight goals. He featured in Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands and in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
Gaizka Mendieta had earlier starred for the Spanish Under-21 team when they finished runners-up in the 1996 European Championships.
Gaizka spent arguably his best years at Valencia CF, where he won the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and finished runner-up in two Champions League finals.
At that time he was considered one of Europe’s finest midfielders, earning a move to Serie A with Lazio. After returning to Spain to play for Barcelona, Mendieta was transferred to Middlesbrough in the Premier League.
