Now 38, the classy former Lazio and AC Milan star won two Champions League medals, three Serie A titles, a Cup Winners’ Cup and three Coppa Italia.
Above all, Alessandro Nesta left his mark wearing the Azzurri shirt, playing in three World Cups. He experienced a real mix of agony and triumph however, as in all three tournaments he was injured during the group phase, thus being unable to play in the knock-out matches.
That of course included 2006, when Italy triumphed in Germany – but he was part of the success, no doubt about that. A proper graduate of the “Italian school”.
Now he will follow the World Cup in Brazil with us, keeping a special eye on Cesare Prandelli’s players as they try to navigate their way through a tricky group that includes England and Uruguay.
