Guest Blog: England’s youth could be the way says Heskey

Former England striker Emile Heskey says a lack of experience in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man World Cup squad may not be the handicap some predict.

For Emile, our Sony expert following England during the World Cup Finals in Brazil, reckons some of today’s ‘new faces’ could hold the key to a successful campaign.

Youthful ... Adam Lallana carries English hopes

“Comparing this current group of players with the South African squad – I think we had more experience in the 2010 World Cup squad,” says Heskey, a member of England’s team four years ago and a veteran of the 2002 Finals in Japan and South Korea.

However, he quickly added; “But sometimes that experience can play against you as well.

“If you’ve got youth and inexperience, the chain of thought isn’t there; the young players, they just go out and play. They go out and enjoy themselves and sometimes that’s the best way to play.”

While fans and media alike speculate on starting XI’s, formations and combinations in defence and attack, Emile says the players who will carry the hopes of a nation would do well to ignore the spin, the hype and the unknown.

“You get the best out of yourself when you’re not over-thinking things,” says Heskey, who won 62 caps in an international career spanning 11 years.

“When you have a senior squad, sometimes, they do over-think things. Equally, having a senior squad, your structure’s probably better as well, so you can actually deal with things better.”
