Muller leads the goals chart

Germany v Portugal: Group G - 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilWhat a tournament, with 44 goals so far, the latest of those coming from John Brooks to seal USA’s dramatic 2-1 win against Ghana in Natal. There has been just one draw, as Iran and Nigeria played out a 0-0 in Curitiba on Sunday.

Leading the way in the scoring charts is Germany’s Thomas Muller (pictured) who netted the first hat trick of an absorbing tournament in Germany’s demolition of Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. It took Muller just 27 minutes per goal … if that’s not German efficiency, I don’t know what is.

Robin van Persie caught the eye with a breathtaking goal as Holland swept aside Spain, 5-1 and scored two in total on the night. That makes the Manchester United flyer joint second-top scorer with his countryman Arjen Robben, and also Neymar and Karim Benzema.

Robben joined Van Persie in running riot against the Spanish, while Neymar got Brazil off to a fine start against Croatia, one of his two goals coming from a controversial penalty. Benzema reminded everyone of the threat France poses as they eased past Honduras, winning 3-0.

The pick of the goals? Now there’s a debate, but there’s little doubt the neutrals’ favorite arrived after 65 minutes of Argentina’s game against Bosnia at the Maracana on Sunday evening, as Lionel Messi remembered his Barcelona lines and left a chain of bemused defenders in his wake before firing in off the post to help seal a 2-1 win. More of the same, please!

Net gains: Muller makes his mark

3 - Muller (Germany)

2 - Van Persie, Robben (both Holland), Neymar (Brazil), Benzema (France).
