Since the Group Stages I’ve been asked a few time if this Costa Rica team, with their style of play, has the firepower to make to the semifinals or maybe the final of this World Cup.
They have a good chance to go far because they have a pretty favorable draw. A team that beats Italy and Uruguay, you have got to take seriously.
In their qualifying group, they finished seven points ahead of Mexico, don’t forget. They have a chance to get to the semifinals, but I don’t think they are potential winners of the tournament.
Argentina has a chance of winning the World Cup for the first time since 1986, but I can say their chances are now lower due to Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero possibly being ruled out.
Aguero may have been quite pedestrian and average in the first three games. He also had a quiet second half of the season for my old team City. I am not sure if his absence does decrease their chances that much, as Lionel Messi is clearly more important for Argentina, but he is still a useful option if available.
Not so much now is being made about the conditions but the climate doesn’t matter too much.
South American teams have been doing well but I can still see a European team winning it. In 2002, the conditions were very humid but Germany still reached the final. The climate should not be an excuse for a European team not winning this World Cup.
